How to Clean uPVC Windows and Doors

uPVC windows and doors are popular for their durability and low maintenance, but they still need regular cleaning to keep them looking fresh. Over time, dirt, algae, mould, and traffic grime can build up—especially around frames, sills, and seals. If left unchecked, this can lead to discolouration and even long-term damage.

At Kirbside Cleaning, we’ve helped hundreds of homeowners across Hockley, Rayleigh, Benfleet, Billericay, Basildon, and Rochford restore their uPVC to like-new condition. In this guide, we’ll show you how to clean uPVC windows and doors safely and effectively—no harsh chemicals or high-pressure washing required.

Why Clean uPVC Regularly?

While uPVC is designed to be weather-resistant, it still benefits from regular upkeep. Cleaning it every few months helps to:

  • Maintain curb appeal and a clean, modern look
  • Prevent algae, mould, and mildew from growing in joints and seals
  • Extend the life of your windows and doors
  • Ensure smooth operation of hinges, runners, and locks
  • Protect seals and improve insulation

Without regular care, uPVC frames can become stained or even permanently discoloured—particularly in damp, shaded areas.

What You’ll Need

  • Warm water
  • Washing-up liquid or non-abrasive uPVC cleaner
  • Microfibre cloths or soft sponge
  • Soft-bristled brush or old toothbrush
  • White vinegar (for stubborn stains)
  • Spray bottle (optional)
  • Dry cloth for buffing

Avoid: Harsh chemicals, bleach, abrasive pads, or scouring powders. These can damage the uPVC surface and degrade the protective layer.

Step-by-Step: How to Clean uPVC Windows and Doors

1. Remove Loose Debris

Use a soft brush or dry cloth to clear cobwebs, dust, and loose dirt—especially from sills, hinges, and runners. This prevents scratches when you start cleaning.

2. Mix a Mild Cleaning Solution

Fill a bucket with warm water and add a splash of washing-up liquid, or use a gentle uPVC cleaner. Spray bottles can be useful for precision work around edges.

3. Wipe Down the Frames

Dip your cloth or sponge in the solution and gently clean the uPVC. Work from top to bottom, wiping along frames, edges, and grooves. Use a soft brush to clean tricky corners, vents, and around handles.

4. Rinse and Dry

Rinse with clean water to remove any soapy residue. Dry the surface with a microfibre cloth to avoid streaks and water spots.

5. Treat Tough Stains

For stubborn marks like algae, bird droppings, or black streaks, apply white vinegar or a specialist uPVC cream cleanser using a soft cloth. Let it sit for a few minutes before gently wiping away. Avoid scrubbing too hard, especially on coloured uPVC.

6. Clean Seals and Glass

Once the frames are done, clean rubber seals with warm water and a soft brush. Then wipe down the glass with a window cleaner and cloth for a spotless finish.

7. Clean Runners and Thresholds

Door thresholds and sliding tracks collect dirt quickly. Use a vacuum or brush to remove grit, then wipe with your cleaning solution. Dry thoroughly to prevent mould or rust.

8. Lubricate Hinges and Locks (Optional)

Apply a silicone-based lubricant to hinges, locks, and runners to keep doors and windows moving freely. Avoid oil-based sprays like WD-40 on plastic parts.

Can You Pressure Wash uPVC?

It’s not recommended. High-pressure water can damage seals, force water into cavities, or even crack brittle uPVC. If you must use a pressure washer, always:

  • Use a low-pressure setting
  • Keep the nozzle 2 feet away
  • Never spray directly at seals or vents

How Often Should You Clean uPVC?

To keep your uPVC looking its best, we recommend:

  • General clean: Every 2–3 months
  • Deep clean: Twice a year (spring and autumn)

If you live near trees, heavy traffic, or sea air, more frequent cleaning may be needed.
