How to Clean Velux Windows
Velux windows are a stylish and practical way to bring light and ventilation into your home, but due to their sloped or overhead positioning, they can be difficult to keep clean. Whether it’s fingerprints, condensation stains, or bird droppings, these roof windows need regular attention to stay clear and functional.
In this guide, we’ll explain how to clean Velux windows safely and effectively—from the inside and outside—without risking damage or injury. Plus, we’ll cover how Kirbside Cleaning includes reachable Velux windows in our regular window cleaning services across Hockley, Rayleigh, Benfleet, Billericay, Basildon, and Rochford.
What You’ll Need
- Warm water
- Washing-up liquid or mild detergent
- Microfibre cloth or soft sponge
- Non-abrasive glass cleaner (optional)
- White vinegar (for limescale or mould)
- Squeegee (optional)
Important: Never use abrasive pads, scouring creams, or high-pressure washers. These can damage the glass, seals, or frame.
How to Clean Velux Windows From the Inside
1. Open and Rotate the Window
Open the Velux window and rotate it 180 degrees until the outer pane faces inward. The window will lock into position, making it safe to clean both sides from inside the room.
2. Clean the Glass
Use warm soapy water and a microfibre cloth to wipe the glass clean. Let stubborn stains soak before gently wiping them off. For streak-free results, finish with a squeegee or dry cloth.
3. Wipe the Frame
Use the same mild cleaning solution to wipe down the window frame, handles, and edges. Be careful not to let excess water drip into the seals or hinges.
4. Rinse the Ventilation Filter
Velux windows have a removable ventilation filter. Pull it out and rinse it under warm water. Let it dry completely before refitting.
How to Clean Velux Windows From the Ground
Using a Water-Fed Pole System
For Velux windows that are out of reach from inside—or for external cleaning without accessing the roof—you can use a telescopic water-fed pole system. These systems allow safe cleaning from ground level using purified water that dries streak-free, with no harsh chemicals.
- Extend the pole to the Velux window height
- Use soft-bristled brushes to gently scrub the glass
- Rinse thoroughly with purified water to remove dirt, algae, and grime
This is the method used by Kirbside Cleaning for all reachable Velux windows as part of our standard service. It’s quick, safe, eco-friendly—and perfect for regular maintenance without using ladders.
Cleaning Tips for Tough Stains
For marks like limescale, sap, or bird droppings:
- Apply a white vinegar and water mix (50/50) to break down mineral deposits
- Use a soft cloth to wipe gently in circular motions
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water
Never scrape or scrub hard—this can leave permanent marks on the glass or frame.
What About Condensation and Mould?
Velux windows can experience condensation, especially in bathrooms or kitchens. This can lead to black mould around seals. Here’s how to handle it:
- Wipe away moisture regularly
- Increase ventilation in the room
- Clean affected areas with a white vinegar solution
Dry thoroughly to prevent recurrence, and consider installing a dehumidifier if condensation persists.
How Often Should You Clean Velux Windows?
- Internal glass and frames: Every 2–3 months
- External glass: Monthly or as part of regular window cleans
- Filters and ventilation flaps: Every 6–12 months
